Kamikaze Space Programme – Tosei Gusoku
This EP on Grey Meta is one the spaciest releases we had here in a while. “Tosei Gusoku” is an interesting piece of contemporary electronic music. On the one hand it is very calm and an introspective listening experience. When I heard the first notes playing, I immediately thought of some ambient similar to Boards of Canada or the like. The sound design is incredibly soothing and it’s wonderful to listen to this.
In contrast to that, the last two tracks feature chopped up breaks galore, yet they didn’t loose this eerie space vibe. It may even lift the extraterrestrial experience to new or at least different heights. The bigger emphasis on breakbeats is a welcome addition to this already outstanding EP. “Benkei” as well as the remix by The Teknoist are coming in strong. Both tracks capture the feeling of bouncing through an endless void nicely. Naturally the remix is harsher than the original, but this really makes sense. It feels like a logical conclusion and this track unmistakably marks the end to this EP.
And now some trivia. Did you know that Kamikaze Space Programme is actually Raiden? Yeah, this guy. No, not from Mortal Kombat, but the Drum and Bass dude, yes. I didn’t hear from him in a while, so it’s cool to see him still producing. Actually, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a ton of great music already out there under this alias. Thus, it’s totally worth checking out his Soundcloud page.
